Funded internship in China

With increasing loss of biodiversity and environmental challenges facing both the UK and China, there is an urgent need for skilled environmental education leaders. This programme aims to support Bangor students and recent graduates to develop their skills and experience in environmental education and communication. This programme will provide 4 months of vocational training at Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanic Garden. Trainees will travel to XTBG at the end of November for four months and gain practical work experience in a cross-cultural setting. By the end of this placement students should be able to:

  1. Identify appropriate communication strategies for different audiences
  2. Design and use a range of media to engage botanic garden visitors
  3. Demonstrate effective team work abilities in cross cultural settings
  4. Access and use the primary literature to support the design of new education programmes
  5. Describe key concepts and principles in environmental education

Placement objectives

  • Design citizen science education material to support wide XTBG project.
  • Contribute to technical development of web platform for citizen science project. Web interface and interpretation of the citizen science data.
  • Organise and deliver education activities for teenagers visiting XTBG for summer camp. The audience is students from Beijing, with high English speaking level.
  • Support winter camp activities – deliver lectures and assist programme leaders 
  • Reflect on the placement by documenting experiences in a video diary (total 1 min) to be made into a crowd fund webpage in partnership with other trainees

 Funding - trainees are expected to fund their own food and subsistence costs.

  • Return flight from London to Kunming
  • Return bus from Kunming to XTBG
  • Accommodation at XTBG for four months
  • Camera for making reflective diary
  • All materials to achieve the placement objectives

 Eligibility - Bangor student or recent graduate interested in gaining practical experience in environmental education in a remote region of China.
